Island Safari Lodge is one of Botswana’s legendary tourist establishments. Built in 1973 by Tony Cox, Island Safari Lodge remains a landmark near Maun in Botswana.
Island Safari Lodge is situated along the Thamalakane river, only 12 kilometer north of Maun and Maun Airport. The close proximity of Island Safari Lodge to the Okavango Delta makes it ideal accommodation for tourists keen to explore the Delta.
In the rainy season during the delta flood, the water from the Thamalakane river, supplemented by inflow from the Boro and Boronyane river, totally surrounds Island Safari Lodge. However, rainfall has not been as plentiful during the past few years. Here’s hoping that nature will oblige and give us a true island experience again!
The area surrounding Island Safari Lodge has plenty of wildlife and bird-watchers will believe they are in paradise. The many trees at the Lodge attract a variety of birds and the expert guides at Island Safari Lodge lead regular specialised bird walks.
Renovations at Island Safari Lodge ensure that the accommodation facilities of 12 thatched chalets and 4 rooms are in tip-top condition. The campsite, sprawled among huge indigenous trees, offers 15 sites.
The restaurant and bar at Island Safari Lodge have been the venue of many memorable evenings. The diverse and exciting a la carte menu in the restaurant retains old favourites such as the ‘elephant’s leg’ (scrumptious lamb shank) and their famous Island Burger. In the bar, the famous climbing pole still offers a challenge to visitors – climb to the top and get back on firm earth in one piece and claim the coveted trophy!
A patio adjacent to the restaurant, bar and lounge at Island Safari Lodge overlooks the Thamalakane river – a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner or a starlit meal. The staff at Island Safari Lodge are friendly and experienced. It is no wonder that the Island Safari Lodge is well-known in Maun, as well as Botswana, to be a perfect venue for weddings and birthdays, as well as corporate functions.
Two swimming pools ensure that guests at Island Safari Lodge have plenty of opportunity to cool down. Junior visitors at Island Safari Lodge can keep themselves occupied on the jungle gym.
Despite Island Safari Lodge having been in business for 30 years, recent refurbishments ensure that the standard of accommodation is exceptional. Nonetheless, Island Safari Lodge has lost none of the charm, spirit and character that made it Maun’s famous landmark.
