GABORONE - FASTEST GROWING CITY IN AFRICA

Gaborone, or “Gabs” as it is known among the locals, carries the title of the world’s fastest growing city. It is the capital of Botswana, which is undoubtedly one of Africa’s economic success stories. The city is named after the leader Kgosi Gaborone, who settled here with his people towards the end of ther 18th century. Movie buffs and keen readers will know that Gaborone is also the home of Mma Precious Ramotswe, the heroine of Alexander McCall Smith’s book series “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency”.

Gaborone is situated 15 km from the South African border post at Tlokweng, with GPS coordinates of 24°39'29''S 25°54'44''E. The city is ideal as a stopover for tourists visiting Chobe National Park or the Okavango Delta. However, there are also many things to see and do in the city, so you can extend your stay in Gaborone for a few days.

The National Museum contains collections of important examples of southern African fine art as well as traditional arts and crafts. One of the most modern buildings in Gaborone is Orapa House, situated on the corner of Mandela Drive and Khama Crescent. This is the hub of Botswana’s important diamond industry and the building is designed such that it makes the most of the daylight, without letting in direct sunlight.

As far as accommodation is concerned, Gaborone offers something for everybody. For travelers looking for self-catering (self-contained) accommodation, the Oasis Motel and Mokolodi Lodge are excellent choices. The City Camp also offers self-catering (self-contained) accommodation, but since their service is atrocious, Temba Travel doesn’t recommend them at all. The Cresta Lodge, Metcourt Inn, Walmont Ambassador, Gaborone Sun Hotel, President Hotel, Oasis Motel.
