About 7 km northwest from Rakops in Botswana you will find the Rakops Lodge - or more correctly known, the Rakops River Lodges. The lodge is only 45 km from the Matswere Gate of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and 60 km from Kumaga Gate of the Makgadikgadi National Park. Lake Xau about 60 km away and all the rivers in the Okavango Delta, such as the Thamalakane River, end at the lake.

The Rakops River Lodge is surrounded by short Setshi bush and Candle Thorn bush. They are often visited by the Makgadikgadi elephants during winter.

Visitors can choose between individually thatched guestrooms with shower and flat screen television or camping facilities. The rooms are small, but spotlessly clean and very well equipped. DStv is available at the lodge. There is also a restaurant that offers full breakfast. Lunch and dinner are served on request.

The campsite is modern, with each campsite boasting a lapa (traditional fireplace). The ablution blocks offer hot showers and modern clean toilets according to international standards.

General Information:

Rakops River Lodge makes use of solar power for lighting and for television, fridges, freezers, boosting pump and general outdoor lighting. The standby generation is only used during rainy days and for ironing. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning and these are functional when the generator is in operation.

In an attempt to be as environmentally friendly as possible, the use of the generator is limited. It is unfortunate to inform visitors that the solar power does not provide enough electricity for gadgets such as laptops and hairdryers. The AC-power plugs are square and are functional only when the generator is in operation.

A stay at Rakops River Lodge will certainly be a very pleasant experience. Rakops loves the beautiful natural environment and therefore takes care of their surroundings. However, customers can still enjoy the major luxuries that they would expect from a lodge much closer to big cities. Rakops River Lodge is looking forward to welcome you.

East of Rakops and Botswana is Zimbabwe's second largest city Bulawayo. The Churchill Hotel is well situated on route to the famous Matobo National Park and perfect for visitors on holiday or business. From the Matobos it is about 5 hours' drive to the famous Great Zimbabwe Monument. The Great Zimbabwe Hotel is the nearest accommodation to the Ruins. Further to the East, about two days' drive from Rakops, are the magnificent Vuma Mountains, home to the Leopard Rock Hotel. The Leopard Rock Hotel is a five-star property with an excellent and popular golf course

People driving from Cape Town to Maun will need to overnight at a few places on route. Your first stop can be Britstown where the Britstown Transkaroo lodge offers neat and affordable accommodation. The King David Hotel in East London can easily be reached within 2 days' drive from Rakops and within a day from Britstown. South Africa is safari country as is Botswana. Perhaps you will consider a Kruger National Park Safari after your visit to the Okavango Delta. Temba Safaris, a South African based tour operator, which has been operating since 1988, might be the best to arrange both your Kruger Park safari and your Kalahari safari.

Rakops River Lodge can be seen as the gateway to the Kalahari Game Reserve, the Makgadigadi Pans, Nxai pans and the Okavango Delta. After visiting these areas most people will drive north and visit the Chobe region where the Mowana Safari Lodge offers luxurious accommodation.

Namibia borders on the western side of Botswana. After your stay at Rakops River Lodge you might visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and drive west to Namibia. Your first stop will most likely be Ghanzi, which is also known as the Gateway to the Kalahari and is still in Botswana. Near Ghanzi, on a private game farm, you will find Thakadu Lodge, a perfect place to enjoy nature. From Ghanzi it will take you about 8 hours to Windhoek, the Capital city of Namibia. Windhoek offers a variety of accommodation. From Windhoek you can visit Damaraland in the North of Namibia where Twyfelfontein Country Lodge near the petrified forest will be the place to stopover. If you prefer the coast, Swakopmund will be your next destination and where better can you stay than in the famous Swakopmund Hotel and Entertainment centre.

Grunau Country House in Grunau in the south of Namibia might be an ideal place to overnight. If, however, you decide to turn south after your visit to the Central Kalahari Game reserve Kang Ultra Stop along the Trans Kalahari Highway will be the place to relax and refresh. Other lodges in Kang that you can consider are Nkisi Guest House or Kalahari Rest just north of Kang.
