The quirky little settlement of Solitaire is a small oasis on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park. There are two lovely lodges to choose from: SOLITAIRE MOUNTAIN LODGE and SOLITAIRE ROADHOUSE. There are also a campground and a general dealer and bakery that offers delicious baked goods. Stop by for their famous apple pie. You can also get supplies, drinks, fuel and tyre repair. This is the ideal stopover if you would like to experience the Namib desert landscapes or hike the rocky foothills. The Kuiseb Canyon, spectacular Spreetshoogte Pass and Namibia’s Sossusvlei Dunes are all in the Namib-Naukluft area.
The town of Solitaire lies on the C19 road between Walvis Bay and Sesriem. It is only 83 km from Sesriem, which is the entrance to the Sossusvlei dune area. It is the ideal base from which to explore the Naukluft mountains.
Solitaire Roadhouse is in the small village and offers 25 rooms nestled around a desert garden and a cool swimming pool. All rooms are fully air-conditioned and have en-suite bathrooms and an outdoor seating area. Guests are welcome to enjoy breakfast and dinner at Cafe van der Lee and can watch the sunset from the bar that looks out over the wide-open desert plains.
Just 7km from Solitaire, in a secluded hideaway at the foot of the Rand Mountains lies Solitaire Mountain Lodge. There are 10 ensuite rooms with air-conditioning. Each room has an outdoor seating area that overlooks the Namib landscape and there is a swimming pool to cool off. A restaurant provides delicious meals and cold drinks.
A visit to the Cheetah Sanctuary is an exceptional experience. Or you can take a sundowner game drive and make use of the fat bikes to see more of the area. Hiking and mountain biking are also popular options. Visitors that want to spend a few days to soak in the restful atmosphere in Solitaire, can request a breakfast pack and do a day trip to Sossusvlei and its majestic dunes.
