Hluleka Nature Reserve lies along the beautiful and tranquil former Transkei coast, within the district of Ngqeleni. It is situated about 90km south east of Mthatha, taking the R61 towards Port St Johns.

The area is comprised of the old Strachan’s grant farm and is an impressive 772 ha in extent, including the coastal strip. It incorporates two magnificent forests reserves – Congwane Mtombo and Ndabeni Hluleka.

This reserve offers a range of diverse ecosystems, from rocky seashores and lagoons to evergreen forests of Quinine, Coral and Natal Fig Trees. The Hluleka River fans out into a long lagoon. A small sandy bay is located at the mouth, with interesting rock formations further along the shore.

Winding paths leading to grassy hilltops within the forests offer spectacular dolphin and whale viewing. Hluleka’s main appeal to the naturalist is the abundant birdlife.

Hluleka has a moderate, humid and sub-tropical coastal climate. Summer temperatures range from 20ºC to 25 ºC and winter temperatures from 8ºC to 21ºC. Frost does not typically occur in the area and humidity in the summer months can be high. The rainfall is high with most of the rain occurring during October and November.
