Port Elizabeth, the capital of the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, goes by many names: the Friendly City, PE, “Ibhayi”, “die Baai” or even the Windy City. Together with nearby Despatch and Uitenhage, the city forms part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

The area was formerly known as Algoa Bay. Portuguese explorers, lead by Bartholomew Dias, were the first Europeans to set foot here in 1497 during their quest to find a trading route to India. However, hunter-gatherer ancestors of San tribes already inhabited this area 100 000 years ago.

In 1820 a party of British settlers arrived in Algoa Bay and shortly afterwards the settlement became known as Port Elizabeth (named after the late wife of the Acting Cape Governor). In 1977 the black consciousness leader Steve Biko was detained and tortured in Port Elizabeth before being transported to Pretoria.

Port Elizabeth is famous for its beautiful Blue Flag beaches (Humewood and St Georges) and is particularly popular among water sports enthusiasts. The city boasts the highest per capita ratio of restaurants per population in the entire country, so you are bound to find a menu that satisfy your taste buds. In addition, Port Elizabeth is also the coastal city with the most daylight hours in the world.

There are a number of attractions to visit: Bayworld (aquarium), a number of memorials (the city has a rich heritage), the stunning Nelson Mandela World Cup Soccer stadium, Donkin Reserve, Holmeleigh Farmyard (the children will love this), MacArthur Baths Swimming Pool complex, the Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World and a number of nature reserves in and around the city. The Apple Express is a steam train that regularly travels between Humewood Road station to the spectacular Van Staden’s River bridge.

Port Elizabeth offers excellent accommodation. For the traveller looking for the ultimate luxury, the 4-star Paxton Hotel is the obvious choice. The Humewood Hotel is an affordable family-orientated establishment. The Pine Lodge Resort is a self-catering resort with a range of accommodation choices, while the 4-star Beach Hotel offers old world charm.
