COLESBERG

Colesberg, a town in the Karoo region of South Africa, is a well-known stopover point on the way from Johannesburg to Cape Town, or if you are on your way from Johannesburg to Port Elizabeth. This is sheep-farming country, although you will find the race horse stud farms here that have produced a number of past Durban July winners. In fact, the golfing legend, Gary Player, owns one such stud farm near Colesberg.

In the past, Colesberg went by the name of “Towerberg”, which means “magic mountain”. This name refers to the characteristic koppie, Coleskop, overlooking the town. If you travel by road, you will be able to see Coleskop from 40 km away. But then you will experience the curious phenomenon that the koppie never seems to get any closer…

Colesberg was the scene of lots of action during the Anglo-Boer War. As a matter of fact, the Boer forces even occupied the town for a number of months. You will find many photographs dating from that time in the Colesberg-Kemper Museum. This is one of the many historical national monuments. Apart from relics from the Anglo-Boer War, you can also find a 19th century toy collection and a Karoo Nomad photo collection. The Karoo Nomads is a group of almost 40 travelling families. The Coleberg-Kemper Museum also outlines the history of the discovery of “Eureka” at nearby Hopetown. This was the first ever diamond to be discovered in South Africa.

Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy the many examples of the early Karoo architecture, of which many are still in excellent condition. The Tourist Information Office offers a walking tour (comprising 3 hours and taking you to the interesting places in Colesberg….including the graveyard…).

Colesberg offers many tourist establishments, and among these Temba Travel recommends the Merino Inn Hotel, the Gables Inn, as well as the Sunset Chalets.
