In 1972 JC Crafford met two tourists who asked where they could stay for the night and this was when the idea of the Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park was born. Today the Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park offers superb self-catering accommodation and camping facilities and is the ideal place to stay when you are exploring the area.
Vanrhynsdorp is in the heart of the Namaqualand, an area that turns into a fairyland of colour in springtime (August to October) when the wild flowers bloom. In addition to the world-famous flowers, the area also offers breathtaking mountain scenery, a myriad of hiking trials and many examples of ancient San rock art.
At the Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park there are 10 chalets, each accommodating between 1 and 4 people. You have a choice between fully airconditioned chalets, with DSTV, and basic chalets – but all of them are impeccably clean and well-maintained. All chalets have towels, clean linen, small bar fridge, equipped kitchenette, as well as a braai area in front of each chalet.
The Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park in Vanrhynsdorp is the home of the Zuid-Afrikaanse Restaurant, where you can enjoy delicious Namaqualand food from an a la carte menu. Their wine list is extensive and includes many South African wines. Ask for the Chef’s Special and remember to reserve some space for a delicious dessert!
Apart from the self-catering chalets, the Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park offers lovely camping sites, all with power points. You also have access to coin-operated laundry machines. Half of the camping sites in the Vanrhynsdorp Caravan Park in the Namaqualand are in the shade.
Why not extend your stay and spend a few days exploring the region? The West Coast, Hantam Karoo and “Knersvlakte” are all within reach, and apart from the breathtaking scenery, the local inhabitants are a diverse, fascinating bunch.
